File renaming app – Rename video clips

File renaming app for using with Motion

I have been busy lately making videos / screencasts I have I think, fourteen Motion 5 tutorials to put into this site. I have also been making videos about using various Mac apps. The latest I made today is also pertinent to video makers. When you import the video clips from your camera you should make sure that the files are properly named and use something like the EXIF Renamer app to  do this. It will give you the file name based on what is in the EXIF meta data and be ready for you to bring into Final Cut Pro X. You could also use it for setting the time code of your video.

I will not be doing any motion 4 tutorials, but you can expect more of the motion tutorials of the Motion 5 variety. I plan to make this a great place to come to to learn motion video animation with the latest Apple movie editing software. Video motion animation is easy enough in Motion 5 if you give yourself time to learn the app with a Motion tutorial or two. I have made about fifteen Motion 5 tutorials that are already posted on Youtube and I have loads more to do. Some of this I am learning and then making a video to show what I have learned. Learn to use Motion 5 and Final Cut Pro X with me. I am having loads of fun diving into what Motion 5 video graphics animation editor from Apple, can do. It is a brilliant application for the creative amongst us. The stuff you can do with the virtual cameras in Motion 5 look exciting and I can’t wait to start using that to make some fly through type of video animations that I can then share with my readers. I would also be happy to hear from you too, if you have some ideas about areas of Motion 5 I could cover on this site. Have a look at the post about motion 5 text effects

Learning Motion 5 – So many controls in the Inspector that you can do amazing stuff

Changing the settings and getting Motion 5 to do what you want

The behaviours that you apply to objects or elements in Motion 5 is what makes it all work. You can get into the inspector and tinker with all sorts of settings that will affect the way that your final video animation looks in the final export out or sharing.

Learning Motion 5 – Export out using the Share Menu

I always used to look for an Export option on the file menu but now it is about sharing your stuff rather that the more technical term of export. You can share out your creative work in Motion to video sharing sites directly to YouTube or Vimeo and you can even shoose to send out by email. I would expect that the size of that file would be crunched as much as possible and the dimensions of a video would also be much smaller.

Learning Motion 5 – Publishing to use directly in Final Cut Pro

Learning Motion 5

Most of the effects in FCPX are made in Motion, The transitions, filters and effects are created in Motion. So why not make your own custom things for Final Cut and save them or share them out so that you can choose them in the Themes or lists of things you can use. There are lower thirds and other titles that you can get at and even alter by doing a right click in FCPX and then it being saved as a copy to use as you will. I have done a couple of those myself and it does save me time later.

Motion 5 to get video in motion

So open up Motion 5 and get that video in motion happening. I have really been enjoying using and learning Motion 5 and passing on the information I find as I learn. You can expect to see loads more video about how to do things in Motion 5 here on the VideoMagical Website.

Using Motion 5 Making video with keyframes and behaviours

Use behaviors in Motion 5 when making video

Using key frames is good but using behaviours can be better. You can get the same thing but with less work with a behaviour and you can even put a few behaviours together and have a rig. I will be making a video to show how to use a rig in Motion. Have a look now at this video to see the basics of keyframes and behaviours used individually. There are a lot of things to consider when you are making a video for YouTube. I have noticed too that the old school types still like to talk about cutting video like would be done in the old days of using a blade to splice actual film stock. Digital is pretty amazing and you couldn’t go back to analogue for making video. Keyframing for motion video is pretty easy with Motion 5 on the Mac.

Making video for Youtube

making videoMostly when I am making video for Youtube I am screencasting. Now I have the Canon 600D which has video capabilities I can do more video using clips for that. I have been learning to use the extra software you can get for the Canon T3i / 600D called Magic Lantern and with that it is even possible to do HDR video. There are so many settings to play with that it really does take some time to get into working out what is the best way to set things up.

Back to screencasting for YouTube

I use ScreenFlow and I can do most of my editing in that excellent Mac screencast application and even export directly out of it to YouTube. I prefer to do some editing in Final Cut Pro X when I am making video, as I have some extras set up ready to go in a project that I use as a template.

What is video motion or x motion ?

Using Effects in Final Cut Pro X to do a Split Screen Effect

Using CrumplePop Effects

There are all sorts of extra third party Final Cut Pro X effects you can get to use in Final Cut Pro X and I found this one for free which lets you easily divide the screen up and have simultaneous things happening on the one time line, You could have a video clip running in the left side of the screen and two more video clips in playing in other boxes on the other side of the screen. In this demonstration I use one that splits the screen into three parts like that, but there are other configurations that you can make also. The TV series ’24′ did something like that to show the story where it was overlapping and was a great visual effect. You can do similar effects in Final Cut Pro X too.

Effects in FInal Cut Pro X

When you are making YouTube video and you want it to be interesting and get more downloads then something like this could be what makes you stand out from the crowd. One of the important tricks of getting the attention of your viewers is to make the first 15 seconds of the video to be engaging to the audience. So why not tell the story in this way or use a picture in picture effect to get your message across. There are loads of other things you could try and the more creative you can be the better.

Get creative with video effects

You don’t have to use a third party effect to do this, you could also split the screen up by arranging clips on the timeline and using the scaling tools along with the cropping tool to get them where thy have to be. If you want to get even more creative still, then perhaps looking into how you can do the same in Motion 5 would be a brilliant idea too. Motion doesn’t have to only be used for making lower thirds, even though Motion 5 does a great job of it. Getting things to move around the screen and be interesting will help make your video interesting and more likely to get shared and hit the holy grail of being a YouTube viral video.

Effects in Final Cut Pro X

It has been a long time since final cut 7 and longer since final cut pro 5. I have never even heard of final pro or final pro cut or video pro x. So what can you make of that? Let’s make a video for youtube with final cut pro effects or better still use final cut pro x effects. We could do a green screen video or do some splitting of the screen into parts. Have fun with Final Cut Pro effects and learn to make your own in Motion 5. Free effects in Final Cut Pro X are available from 3rd party suppliers like CrumplePop and CoreMelt.

Making a video for YouTube – Do you want to go Shaky Cam?

Getting started making a video for YouTube

If you haven’t made a video before and you’re just getting started with video making you might wonder what it is that you need to do to make a YouTube video. Fortunately if you want to make videos for YouTube, these days quite often you will have the tools that you need at hand. With your Mac you can start by recording yourself using the iSight camera and editing the movie using iMovie. I would recommend that you get an external microphone, even if it is only a cheap microphone for your YouTube make a video session. The internal microphone will still work, but it will sound as though you are far away and a little tinny. Do remember when you are making a YouTube video that having good sound is very important.

Making videos for YouTube with your camera phone

The trend with phones is to have smart phones that are also cameras and quite often these cameras will also do video. It is quite easy for you to make a YouTube video using this mobile technology. Of course my favourite phone is the iPhone and the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S do have a good video camera included. There is absolutely no reason why you could not make a video for YouTube with your Android phone or your other smart phone.

Blair Witch Project Type Vomit Inducing Camerawork

With the wide-angle lens that you have on phone cameras, it is easy for you to record yourself and make a video blog which is known as a vlogging. Sometimes when you make videos for YouTube in this fashion and you’re moving around then you might get too much video camera movement and end up with something that looks like it is from the ‘Blair Witch Project’. You might get away with that when you’re making a video for YouTube, if the video is short. You would certainly need to make sure that your YouTube video is interesting so that your viewers will continue watching through this vomit inducing type of camera work. As you can tell, I’m not too fond of the shaky cam style of video photography. If you have a tripod, and you should have one, then why not use it?

You can make a YouTube video today

making a video for youTubeThe first thing to do when you’re making a YouTube video is to have some ideas of what you want to present in your video. What is the story you want to tell? It might be a good idea not to be too serious, as it seems that the best performing viral videos on YouTube tend to be the silliest. It used to be that the most popular videos were the ones where the guy got kicked in the balls and now it is likely to be a parent filming a baby doing something funny but cute. What it really comes down to with making a video that is successful and engages the audience is a subject matter that will twist of the emotions in some way or other. If you can make somebody truly laugh or cry, feel happy or feel sad with a story then you might have a viral video on your hands.

Making youtube videos is fun, so lets get to it and see what we can come up with. Youtube to video is when you want to have a hard copy of a video you like off  YouTube. It can be a little difficult to download youtube videos sometimes, but it can be done. You can get into Motion 5 and making video effects. Will you be making a video for YouTube? Check out a YouTube tutorial.

Round Trip between Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 to make a new Lower Third

I used to be a user of Final Cut Express which worked pretty well and was quite similar to Final Cut Pro version 7. Not too long after Final Cut Pro 10 became available I bought it and I have been very glad to have this software tool to use to help me create my videos. Many of the videos that I make our screencasts and I could do the whole job, if I wanted to, in my screen capture tool of preference, ScreenFlow. I have found though that although the editing tools in ScreenFlow are quite good, I do actually prefer to do the editing in Final Cut Pro X Motion. ScreenFlow makes it very easy to insert a transition, although there are some small tasks that do seem a little bit fiddly. Although having said that about ScreenFlow, I do find that once you really get into using Final Cut Pro X you can do things pretty quickly and efficiently.

Video editing efficiency in Final Cut Pro X

I quite like to have video animations at the start of my video intros and I find that creating these video graphics is very easy either using Final Cut Pro X or by using Motion 5. There is a link between these two applications that is easy to access from within Final Cut. All I have to do is to do a right click or a command click on a title or a Final Cut generator, for example and it will open up Motion 5 for me so that I can make any changes that I want to, inside of Motion. Once the changes have been made I can save the file in Motion and go back to Final Cut Pro and use that new video element.

Round tripping FCPX And Motion 5

In this YouTube video I show you how to do this round tripping between the two applications with some editing of a lower third graphic. What I wanted to do with the lower third graphic was to have the default text asking for the Like Click in YouTube. By having this lower third graphic already with the default text as required, it saves me having to make the same edit over and over again. Now that I have created a new final third graphic that I can access from the titles area in Final Cut Pro X, I have increased my efficiency at creating my YouTube videos.

Apple Motion 5 Tutorial

Learning to use Motion 5 by editing the pre-existing templates

Motion is used to create titles for Final Cut Pro X and it is also used to create effects and the generators that can be used more than once. Motion 5 is a video graphics animation application that does deserve to be an application all by itself and separate. The way that you use it is quite different from Final Cut Pro, but it is very good to have it there as a sister application to extend what you can do in FCPX. Motion 5 is a marvellously useful application for creative people in the motion animation graphics business and it is perfect for you to use to create stuff to enhance in your YouTube videos. Have a look in the Mac App Store at Final Cut for Mac or get a free trial to try from Apple. Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 are a great team to have working for you on your Mac.

Starting off in Final Cut Pro by using the titles, effects, transitions and generators that are available to download after you have bought the application, gives you a good start. It shouldn’t take long though, before you are looking to make something that is completely original, that will give your videos something to help them stand out from the crowd. This is where an application like Motion 5 excels. In this Motion 5 tutorial I think you will see the usefulness of the application as used in conjunction with Final Cut editing for making your viral video for YouTube.

Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5

Cutting video is an art and yet easy to do in Final Cut Motion and you will end up with Final Cut video ready to export and upload. Motion Final Cut are super tools to give you motion video that you can upload to YouTube. I have to say I am very pleased with the new Final Cut Pro video Motion applications. Better than using Final Cut 7. What is video pro x?

So you will be able to come to VideoMagical to learn some of the technical details of how to create videos for Youtube as well as looking at the more difficult side of things, which is how to make things go viral. As well as using applications that work on the desktop Mac we will also be looking at how we can use applications such as iMovie iPad.

YouTube video maker of the week

Each week I will choose a prominent YouTube videographer and have them as the YouTuber of the week. Apart from using that as a way to promote a video maker on YouTube that impresses me, I would also like to have it as a way to discuss what they do and how they do it. I may even try to get a chat with that person, perhaps with a Google Hangout. Let’s see what people have done so far and had success with and see if we can replicate that success. If you would like to suggest yourself for the position of YouTuber of the week, then contact me using the contact form on the Video Magical contact page. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Reviews and discussions about hardware

viral video for YouTube

For making my own videos I use Canon cameras. Lately I have bought a Canon 600D and I also use a Canon Vixia, which is an excellent, fairly inexpensive video camera. At present I don’t have a phone or iPad that records video, but I do plan to buy the iPad 3. I like the way that the DLSR video shooters community are looking at ways to cut costs for making video, by making their own tools for the job. I have already made myself a tabletop dolly that I am really pleased with. I have set it up so that I will also be able to use it on a track of some sort and I will be showing what I’ve done on VideoMagical website in a future posting.

Audio for video is extremely important if you want a viral video for YouTube

This will be an vital area of discussion on this website, because as everybody knows people will watch a video even if the visuals are of poor quality, so long as the sound is good. Whereas if the sound is bad, more viewers are likely to stop watching, even if the video quality is good. I am still building up the hardware that I want for recording audio with the video. I have a number of microphones that I can plug-in directly to the camera and other microphones that I can use to capture audio. I have a Zoom H2 recorder and I can also use the iPad to record sound externally. The microphone that I use with the iPad is an iRig microphone. I do plan to buy a preamp, probably a Juiced Link CX231, so that I can use phantom powered XLR shotgun microphones as my audio source. Another essential item that will have to be bought at some point in time, will be a decent clip on microphone. Initially I expect to buy one that will plug into the camera and eventually I would like to get a wireless clip on lavalier microphone.

Video is the future of the Internet

With the increase of broadband speeds and the ubiquity of the Internet and the ability to record video easily, there is going to be an increase of the use of video online. We see from time to time on the news items on the television, that there has been a silly video that has gone viral and had thousands or even millions of views. Let’s have a discussion about how that happens. Mostly it is down to luck and the video being picked up by some big player, that is able to generate a large number of views for that video, so that it takes off like a runaway snowball getting bigger and bigger. I do like that it is possible for the ordinary person to be able to create a video and to share it out and to take on the video professionals. Sometimes all that is needed is enthusiasm to make a viral video for YouTube

Ask me some questions about video

While I am not a video professional myself, I would like to think that I should do a good job of sharing with you what I am learning myself about video as I go. If I don’t know the answer to your question, then I do have resources to be able to find an answer for you. I do have the added benefit that my son Liam Allen is a professional cameraman and quite often that would be the first place for me to go to get the answer to a question. Seeing as he is a professional cameraman he does tend to prefer the expensive professional solutions to YouTube viral video. On the other hand I can balance that out with my desire to produce video as inexpensively as possible while getting the best possible quality out of what I can use.

Hands up all those people that want to make a viral video for YouTube.

Making a youtube video or making videos for youtube and have that video viral out on the interwebs is the aim. Videos viral or viral video YouTube is easy and also hard to make happen and sometimes just needs luck to give a video a case of the virals. Youtube 3 is something that will have to be looked into, what does it mean for us video makers? Youtube make a video. One thing that is certain is that we would all like to know how to make a viral video. It wouldn’t have to be one of the best viral videos, just so long as it goes viral on YouTube. I would like to  have this site like a viral video film school.
